5 Black Mothers Share Their Greatest Lessons in Motherhood

Black women birth nations, we heal communities, we juggle multiple tasks with babies on our hips and wands in our hands. We truly are magic. In honor of Mother's Day, we’re highlighting some of our favorite mothers and the greatest lessons they’ve learned from their journey in motherhood. Thank you for sharing your learnings with us. We see you. We celebrate YOU.

The greatest lesson that motherhood has taught me

is that you don’t have to be the best, you just have to do your best

It’s shown me patience and understanding with myself, daughter, and relationships.

I spent so much time focusing on this old self I once was and that was the biggest lesson I faced. Letting go to surrender and fully step into my power as a woman. In all its totality. Once I understood what that meant, I was able to go forward in my journey. It has also taught me to honor myself in order to keep a balance. My heart has expanded. I am a better woman than I was before I had my daughter.

Motherhood has completed me in every way.

The greatest lesson motherhood has taught me

is that I must show grace and kindness to myself as I journey down this road that I was meant to travel. My daughter is mesmerized by me and sees me as absolutely perfect, even when I mess up, so there is no need to be hard on myself as I learn and grow in this new role. I also realized early on that motherhood is not something that I have to carry alone. There is so much truth in, “it takes a village.” My mother has been present every single day to hold my hand through what has been the hardest, most beautiful thing I’ve ever experienced. I am a mother who is strengthened by other mothers.
